Meet MacKenzie King: Lois
Here at MacKenzie King, we are always looking to expand our team with new talent. We’ve recently recruited a new member of staff in our Suffolk office. Lois has been with us for three months now, working as a specialist recruitment consultant, and we’re really pleased with how quickly she has fitted into the team. She has quickly gained an understanding of our clients and candidates, as well as how MacKenzie King works.
Lois is AAT Qualified herself, with a background in finance. This has given her excellent subject matter knowledge and she is really good at understanding our candidates’ experience and matching them successfully with clients. Having recently been a candidate herself, she has experienced the good, the bad and the ugly with recruitment companies. This means that she knows how people should be treated, which fits exactly with our respectful MacKenzie King ethos!
Hi, Lois! You’ve only been with MacKenzie King for a short while. How have your first few months been?
The first few months at MacKenzie King have been an exhilarating start to the year. I’ve been learning and developing new skills from my more experienced colleagues.
What did you do before you came to work for MacKenzie King?
After leaving secondary school, I felt University was not for me and decided to get into an AAT apprenticeship. After completing my Level 4, I became a Finance Manager for a well-established society in Northamptonshire, but after getting married and moving to Ipswich it was time for a career change.
Why did you decide to change from a career working within finance to one within financial recruitment?
With over 7 years of experience in the Finance industry as a AAT qualified Accountant, I took pride in the industry knowledge I had gained and was keen to utilise that knowledge in a new and exciting career. I was looking for a challenging and rewarding career and having heard a lot about the recruitment world from being a candidate, I thought it would fit me perfectly. I am very passionate about people, and recruitment gives me the opportunity to develop lasting relationships and help people to change their lives for the better.
What attracted you to the role at MacKenzie King?
The attraction to MacKenzie King for me was the opportunity to start my Recruitment career within a Finance specialised agency, alongside their great reputation amongst other recruiters. The opportunity included responsibility for running my own desk and I thrive on the feeling of building something. The chance to build my own market is like running a mini business within a business, and this was really exciting. This also included full training and support from highly experienced colleagues and managers, which I have valued from day one.
What’s one piece of advice you give to every candidate?
Do your research! Researching the company before an interview and learning as much as possible about its services, products, customers and competition will give you an edge in understanding the company’s needs. The more you know about the company and what it stands for, the better chance you have of selling yourself in the interview. You should also find out about the company’s culture and environment to gain an insight into your potential happiness on the job; an interview is a two way interview to confirm it’s a match.
What do you do when you’re away from the office?
I have a strong passion for travelling, exploring new cities, meeting new people and enjoying local cuisine. Also, as a keen animal lover, a dog walk in the woods ending at a local pub with the husband never goes amiss!
And finally, what advice would you give anyone looking to work in recruitment?
When speaking to agencies, talk to recruitment consultants about their local experiences, and get a good insight into the local networks. If you are competitive, money motivated and are prepared to work hard then recruitment will offer you are career that you will enjoy. It can be hard work and it can be frustrating at times. However, nothing beats the thrill of placing a candidate in a job they wanted, especially when the client is happy that they have secured their services and you can walk away with well-earned commission.
Thank you for the insight into your role with MacKenzie King, Lois! We’re really pleased that you’re enjoying your role here, and we’ll look forward to seeing what the future holds for you. If you’re looking to join a forward-thinking financial recruitment agency who are more than happy to support their team through promotion, feel free to get in touch with MacKenzie King.
